Program helps student with exams

Exams are a part of life for students, and those at Fort Frances High School looking to be better prepared for them not look further than the Academic Assistance Program.
“It’s a great place to come study during lunch time,” said Natasha Shack, the local program’s teacher, who hopes students will take advantage of the program, and that parents are aware of it during exam times.
Located in Room 151, the AAP currently runs every day from 11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m.
Once exams start (Jan. 25-28), the program will be open all day as an area for students to use to study for exams and complete their work.
“It’s kind of like a guided study period,” Shack explained.
“Kids can come and go as they please,” she noted.
Teachers also can promote and refer students to the program—such as providing the work a student missed because they were away for a sporting event, Shack added.
But any student is welcome to drop by during the time with their lunch, use the room to study, and get work done, she stressed.
Students at all levels can benefit from using the program, Shack said, whether they’re seeking some quiet time to finish up work or to use one of the available computers in the room—all while having a teacher present to help them with any schoolwork questions they have.
“If they then get a complication in their math problem, then we can work it out or if they want someone to proofread their English, then I’m here for that,” she noted.
During exams, it’s also useful for students who may have to catch the bus to school in the morning even though their exam may be in the afternoon.
Besides accessing the AAP program, Shack has a few other tips for students as the countdown to first semester exams begin.
This includes encouraging students to start reviewing and studying for exams now, as well as using their classroom teachers as support and guidance in preparing.
“[And] get plenty of sleep,” she added. “It’s hard to write a lengthy exam if you are tired!”
