Council is scheduled to hear a presentation from the Binesiwag Centre for Wellness at tonight’s meeting, regarding their request for the town in respect to Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls (MMIWG),
On behalf of the families of MMIWG in Canada, the Binesiwag Centre for Wellness respectfully requests the following from the town:
- Education & Awareness–To become an ally with families by providing public service announcements, advertising and billboard displays
- Reconciliation–Taking part in and contributing to a committee focused on creating a Treaty Three Nation action strategy
- Commemoration–In response to the 231 calls to justice, provide a location for a commemorative display for families; and
- Support–Provide a letter of support to the proposed “Ogimaakwe Ka-ki-no-Igenwin” (Women’s Wellness Lodge), an anti-human trafficking safe house for the Nation.
Binesiwag Centre for Wellness is contracted under Treaty #3 to carry forward the MMIWG portfolio for its Nation.
Tonight there will also be a presentation from the town’s chief building official Cody Vangel who will discuss the land use and economic development feasibility study for the re-development of the Shelvin Woody Yard and Market Square Gateway (Nursing Station).
RRFDC
As well, Tannis Drysdale will deliver a presentation on 2019 economic development on behalf of the Rainy River Future Development Corporation (RRFDC).
Meanwhile, the town has a recommendation to pay membership fees for the Northwestern Ontario Sports Hall of Fame and Museum and a request to install a bench at McIrvine Road Park in honour of Dennis (Archie) Livingstone has been recommended for approval.
The individual who made the park bench request to council is responsible for its costs.
Also at tonight’s meeting, the town has a recommendation to adopt the “Accountability and Transparency Policy,” in accordance with the Municipal Act.
The purpose of the legislation is to provide measures where the town will try to ensure that it is accountable to the public for its actions, and try to ensure that its actions are transparent to the public to meet current legislation
The policy will be reviewed every term of council.
Tonight’s regular council meeting will follow the committee of the whole meeting, which gets underway at 5:30 p.m.
The public portion of the meeting will follow two in-camera items.
The first item pertains to a personal matter about an identifiable individual, including municipal or local board employees and the other item is regarding litigation or potential litigation, including matters before administrative tribunals, affecting the municipality or local board, on Agency One matters.
Other business on the agenda tonight includes:
- a letter from RRFDC re: Per Capita Contribution’
- a letter from Rainy River Federation of Agriculture re: request support for Bill 156
- a e-mail dated February 5, 2020 from S. Degagne, Colonization Road West resident re: Pedestrian Safety on Colonization Road West
- a report re: Blue Box Program Transition – Preferred date of transition
- a by-law to authorize a Data Sharing Agreement for purposes of utilization of the Town’s geospatial data with HTFC Inc; and
- a by-law to authorize the signing of a Memorandum of Settlement
