Pot left on stove sets off alarm

The Fort Frances Fire & Rescue Service responded to the report of a fire alarm sounding in an apartment on the 1000 block of Webster Avenue around 8:25 p.m. yesterday.
Upon arrival, fire personnel discovered a pot had been left on the stove, which produced smoke that activated the apartment’s smoke alarm.
“This is a classic example of the value of smoke alarms. In this case, a neighbour heard the alarm and summoned the fire department before a major fire resulted,” Fort Frances Fire Chief Gerry Armstrong said this morning.
“Often these cooking-related incidents can become serious very quickly, especially at this time of day when people are often tired and will lie down to rest while heating food on the stove,” he added.
Because no one was in the apartment at the time of the alarm, the first notice of the incident was from a neighbour who heard the smoke alarm sounding.
The apartment sustained minor smoke damage, with fire personnel remaining on the scene for about 45 minutes.
