Five local students were named winners in the Town of Fort Frances’ recent poster/slogan contest to raise awareness about recycling.
The winners were St. Michael’s students Carson Noga and Adam George, from Tracy Wright’s Grade 3 class, and J.W. Walker students Cassidy Lampert, Calie Clendenning, and Maddy McKay from Ed Cain’s Grade 8 class.
The Grade 3 winners received a gift card from Wal-Mart and a water bottle while the Grade 8 winners got Wal-Mart gift cards.
As well, the entire Grade 3 class received recycling activity books while all of the Grade 8 students received water bottles just for participating in the contest.
A total of 31 posters were submitted between the two schools.
The contest was organized by Sandra Robertson and Sherin Hagen of the Operations and Facilities division, and funded through a grant from Waste Diversion Ontario as a recycling education promotion.
All of the poster entries were hung in Council Chambers at Monday night’s meeting.
Looking at the posters, Deputy Mayor Sharon Tibbs said “every single one of these pictures has a wonderful message.”
“We work so hard in this community to recycle, and to improve our recycling in our area, and we are so proud when we see young people do these kinds of things because we see them taking responsibility for their planet,” she remarked.
The town is expected to continue to do more recycling education initiatives in the near future.
Also at Monday night’s meeting, council:
•executed a new agreement with Bearskin Airlines for the collection of passenger facility fees;
•agreed to a recommendation to donate scratch pads, pens, and pins for the District 1A Senior Games registration packages, as well as make a financial contribution in the amount of $150;
•agreed to a recommendation to buy 10 tickets to the Shrine Circus here May 17 at a cost of $105; and
•agreed to a recommendation to provide financial support, to a maximum of $1,500, towards the 12th-annual “Fly-In, Drive-In BBQ” at the Fort Frances Airport on June 4.
