‘Poppy drive’ underway

“Lest ye break faith with us who die, we shall not sleep, though poppies grow in Flanders Fields.”
Those immortal words of Col.
John McCrae may have faded into history, but every year at this time, the Royal Canadian Legion reminds us of those who made the ultimate sacrifice in various wars and conflicts since the First World War.
Once again, volunteers are taking to the streets to distribute poppies.
This year’s campaign officially kicked off yesterday.
Campaign volunteer Wendy Derendorf said veterans also will be at Safeway next Wednesday through Saturday as well as at Canadian Tire on Saturday.
And there is a new twist this year. For the first time, the Legion is sponsoring the Air Cadets, who also will be accepting donations and distributing poppies at various locations around town.
Donations from poppy sales go towards caring for disabled veterans, maintaining graves and memorials, and a number of charities.
The Royal Canadian Legion also sponsors various activities and programs for young people.
More volunteers are needed for this year’s campaign.
