Policing conference underway tonight

Youth violence will be the focus of the local Community Policing Committee’s conference slated tonight and tomorrow at La Place Rendez-Vous.
“Just from the things that go on in our community, the issues around youth violence, we put together the School Violence Prevention Team, a sub-committee of the CPC, which meets once a month to discuss issues in our area,” Cadet Carol Judson of the local OPP said this morning.
“So the youth violence theme was appropriate for the conference here,” Judson added, noting she, as well as Sgt. Steve Loshaw and Cst. Cameron Howard, sit on the district policing committee along with other residents and officials.
The conference will start with registration at 5 p.m., followed by a social hour at 6, opening remarks at 6:50 p.m., and dinner at 7.
It really gets underway tomorrow with a continental breakfast at 7 a.m., followed by workshops throughout the morning, a noon lunch break, and then a final workshop and closing remarks around 3 p.m.
Judson said the conference will attract guests from across Northwestern Ontario.
Some local presenters will include Kelly Olson, co-ordinator of the district Substance Abuse Prevention (SAP) Team, who will talk about teens and partying.
Meanwhile, Gord McCabe, vice-principal of Fort Frances High School, will discuss bullying and school violence along with bullying expert Karen Hayd.
Other topics include volunteer management, restorative justice, and computer crime and the Internet.
