Pole fire disrupts telephone service

A Bell Canada repair crew was working this morning to restore telephone service to residents and businesses along both sides of Highway 11/71 from Norfab Building Components Ltd. west to Heward Road.
Service has been out since yesterday morning when a transformer apparently overloaded and set fire to the pole upon which it stood.
Fort Frances firefighter Dave Crichton said this morning that the call came into the dispatch at 10:52 a.m. from an employee at Norfab, which is located adjacent to the affected pole.
Crichton said Fort Frances Capt. Joe Bobczynski was the first to arrive and secure the scene until the Alberton fire department responded around 11:30 a.m.
“They had to wait for Hydro One to shut off the power before they could begin to extinguish it,” Crichton noted.
It was not known as of press time today when the phone service would be restored.
Service in other parts of Alberton did not appear to be affected.
