Pledge forms out for Alzheimer’s walk

Exercise not only is good for the body but for the mind, so why not walk for your health–and to raise money for a worthy cause?
The annual “Walk for Alzheimer’s,” hosted by the Alzheimer Society of Kenora-Rainy River Districts, is coming up here Saturday, June 16, offering 1K and 2K walks along the waterfront.
But before then, participants can start collecting pledges, said Abbie Siroiskha, the new fund development co-ordinator for the local Alzheimer Society.
She directed pledge-getters to register online at
If you want to pick up a registration form in person, drop by Northwoods Gallery & Gifts here.
You also can contact Mary O’Connor, the local client services co-ordinator for the Alzheimer Society, at 276-9105 and she will get forms to you.
“All the money raised stays in our area to make sure that our caregiver education continues to be free,” noted Siroiskha.
The event is a free walk with no cost to register.
“We welcome everyone,” she remarked. “All ages are welcome to come partake in the walk.
“It’s a family fun walk,” Siroiskha added. “It’s really just to bring awareness of what we do here in Northwestern Ontario.”
The theme of this year’s walk is “Who Are You Walking For?”
Siroiskha said a “memory wall” will be set up on site.
“People are welcome to bring down a photo of their loved one and put it up on the ‘memory wall,'” she noted.
“If they don’t have a photo, we have sticky notes and that kind of thing for people to write down who they’re walking for or why they’re walking, and they can put that up on the ‘memory wall.'”
Registration begins at 10 a.m. at the Sorting Gap Marina, with a welcome and warm-up to follow at 11 a.m., after which time the walks will begin.
There will be two routes. The 1K route will go from the Sorting Gap to La Verendrye Hospital and back while the 2K route goes to Seven Oaks and back.
After working up an appetite, walkers can meet back at the Sorting Gap Marina and enjoy a free barbecued lunch.
There also will prizes awarded for the top individual and team fundraisers.
The event will wrap up by 1:30 p.m.
Walkers are reminded to bring along lawn chairs or blankets to sit on (there are tables and benches at the Sorting Gap but there might be more participants than they can accommodate).
The event, which used to be held in October, was changed to June in 2015.
At that time, it also saw a new name (it previously was the “Walk for Memories”) and a new start location at the Sorting Gap Marina.
