Pither’s Point beach declared unsafe

The Northwestern Health Unit has declared Pither’s Point unsafe for swimming for the first time this season after high bacterial counts were discovered during routine beach sampling.
“At Pither’s Point it’s just the usual due to the heavy rains,” Fort Frances public health inspector Dave Coats explained this morning.
“It more than likely washed a bunch of stuff into the lake therefore elevating the bacteria levels,” he said.
The beach will remain closed until satisfactory test results are obtained
“We’re sampling today and hopefully we’ll have results back sometime Saturday and if all goes well it will be open Saturday afternoon,” said Coats. “If not, it will have to wait probably to Tuesday or Wednesday of next week because we’ll do a re-sampling Monday.
The Health Unit here tests area beaches to determine bacteria levels once a week.
Barwick and Morley beaches also remain closed due to high bacterial counts found in the waters there last week.
