Press Release
On April 13, students and staff at a number of Rainy River District School Board schools and the Education Centre will be wearing pink to stand up together against bullying in all of its forms.
According to statistics, most students in Canada have been bullied at one time in their lives.
In some cases, bullying is an ongoing issue that seriously can affect the lives of those being bullied and also the bully.
“Bullying is a complex issue, and can take many forms,” said Shane Bliss, who chairs the board’s Character Education Steering Committee.
“We know that one of the best ways to prevent bullying is peer intervention,” he noted.
“By encouraging students to stand up against bullying, we believe that it will make people think twice about the impact that their actions have on others and will help to create a more positive climate in our schools.
“Pink Days are a fun way for students to show their solidarity and encourage participation in preventing bullying,” Bliss added.
Some schools, such as North Star Community School in Atikokan, held Pink Day activities on Feb. 23.
To celebrate the day, North Star had students develop short newspaper-style articles about the history of Pink Day and the importance of standing up against bullying.
Students at Robert Moore School, who are celebrating Pink Day on April 13, are learning about bullying as a part of the “Character in Action” curriculum leading up to the event.
