Phone scam hits area

The Fort Frances OPP would like to advise the public of a telemarketing scam that has hit the area.
Numbers in the 807 exchange are being inundated with calls from a company called National Reservations in Virginia, U.S.A.
The initial call is a computer voice which advises that you have won a vacation and if you want to find out more to press 9, or if you want to be removed from the service to press 8.
Cst. Caroline Spencer noted anyone that get these phone calls should simply hang up, as finding out more about the offer will get a live operator on the line, asking the resident for personal information such as a credit card number.
She stressed you should never give this sort of information out over the phone.
“If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is,” warned Cst. Spencer.
In other police news, officers from the Treaty #3 Police Service arrested a man on the 300 block of Sixth Street in Rainy River shortly before 7 p.m. on Tuesday.
Police observed that the front door to the LCBO outlet had been broken and the suspect was standing outside the store.
As a result of their investigation, the OPP have charged a 27-year-old Gameland man with break and enter and theft under $5,000.
He has been released from custody and will appear in court at a later date.
