FORT FRANCES—Pet owners who stroll along the riverfront are being asked to keep their four-legged friends from urinating on the lamp posts that line the walkway.
Due to high traffic and excessive pet urination around the light standard bases, their shinny black finish has started to corrode, said Sharon Gurski of the Fort Frances Power Corp.
“Hundreds of poles have to be refurbished because of the problem and we’d like the public to have their pets go to the washroom elsewhere,” she stressed.
Throughout July and August, 90 poles along the waterway will be refurbished by two summer students the FFPC has contracted for the job.
People will notice red paint on various poles, which have been marked by workers for refurbishing purposes, Gurski said.
Upon completion, the poles will be coated in a tough rubberized paint, which hopefully will stop the corrosion problem.
“The paint will help curb the problem, or prolong it anyways, but we really need pet owners to be responsible,” Gurski stressed.
The project is expected to cost the town thousands of dollars. As well, Gurski said more poles may be re-coated next summer.
There also are several garbage baskets along the walkway for the public to dispose of pet waste responsible.
“Please help keep the riverfront clean and enjoyable,” Gurski said.
