‘Peal for Peace’ planned tomorrow

Following a minute of silence, bells will ring worldwide tomorrow at noon to mark the United Nations’ 20th-annual “A Peal for Peace.”
Although no formal ceremony has been organized in Fort Frances this year, local residents are encouraged to remember the observation at noon tomorrow.
“Wherever you are, whatever you are doing on the third Tuesday in September at noon–stop for a minute to join your mind and heart with Canadians across the country and people around the world, as an expression of dedication to peace.
“Then join in a moment of joyful sound,” a UN “A Peal for Peace” brochure suggested.
In 1981, the UN General Assembly declared the Third Tuesday of every September as the International Day of Peace. Public observances are now an annual event in major cities and local communities across Canada.
The minute of silence is to be followed by the pealing of church bells and other positive sounds to celebrate hope for world peace.
The goal of the “A Peal for Peace” is to have people from every walk of life, and every political and religious persuasion, throughout the world join together in a common humanity which rises above global differences and concentrates on world peace.
Tomorrow’s minute of contemplation will be particularly significant in the wake of last week’s terrorist attacks in the U.S.
