With the possible call for a provincial election in the news once again, the local Progressive Conservative candidate will give her take on issues relevant to the district at tonight’s council meeting.
In correspondence with Fort Frances CAO Bill Naturkach, the town has indicated council is requesting Cathe Hoszowski speak on funding for ambulance service for unincorporated areas via the District Social Services Administrative Board, tax incentive zones, municipal tax increase referendums, municipal revenue shortfalls, and funding for Rainycrest Home for the Aged, among others.
Hoszowski officially was chosen as the PC candidate by the local riding association Feb. 1.
Like Geoff McClain, the local Liberal candidate and mayor of Ear Falls, who talked to town council at its last regular meeting in July, Hoszowski has been allotted a maximum of 15 minutes for her presentation.
Hoszowski will be given her time to speak to council around 7 p.m.
McClain spoke to council July 28, with his major point being that rebuilding communication between levels of government is key to the future of Northern Ontario.
Other business at tonight’s council meeting will include:
•a three-month extension of the existing landfill site operational agreement;
•traffic control at the intersections of Church Street and Portage Avenue and Church Street and Victoria Avenue;
•a request for a stop sign at McIrvine Road and River Road West;
•a request from local resident Melvin Haukaas regarding a “ghost centre” on the La Verendrye parkway sidewalks;
•an adjustment to traffic light setting at the intersection of Church Street and Mowat Avenue;
•upgrades to walking paths on the Eighth Street cross-country ski trail;
•an activities report (April 1- June30) from Geoff Gillon, economic development officer, and Telford Advent, chair of the Rainy River Future Development Corp.;
•a request from Kathy Haukaas to proclaim September as “Arthritis Month” in the Town of Fort Frances;
•a request from the Association of Municipalities of Ontario to sign a letter of support regarding “blue box” funding; and
•a bylaw to approve a contract of employment with Doug Brown as the new manager of Operations and Facilities for the Town of Fort Frances.
