On Sunday at 10:50 p.m., Rainy River District OPP officers conducted a routine traffic stop on the 400 block of King’s Highway in Fort Frances.
It was revealed that the male driver from Manitoba was prohibited from driving, and also currently was serving a court order stemming from other criminal offences.
Subsequently, the officers continued their investigation and located more than 24 pounds of marijuana inside the vehicle.
Both the male driver and female passenger were arrested, the vehicle was seized, and both individuals were taken to Fort Frances OPP detachment.
The marijuana was estimated to have a street value of more than $60,000.
Garrett Sigurdson, 26, of Winnipeg was charged with possession of marijuana for the purpose of trafficking, two counts of failing to comply with a court order, and driving without a licence.
He was remanded into custody pending a bail hearing today (Aug. 24) in provincial court here.
Laura Matthews, 27, of Winnipeg was charged with possession of marijuana for the purpose of trafficking.
She appeared in court here Monday and was released from custody on a recognizance.
Her next court appearance is scheduled for Sept. 26.
