On Friday, over fifty marihuana plants and over 700 grams of cannabis marihuana was seized by OPP officers during a drug investigation in the community of Devlin.
The drugs seized had a combined street value of over $68,000.
The investigation was a coordinated effort between members of the Fort Frances OPP detachment, the Fort Frances OPP Drug Enforcement Section and the Northwest Region Drug Unit.
Ryan Lennstrom and Donna Shoemaker of Devlin have been charged under the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act including:
•one count of production of marihuana
•one count of possession for the purpose of trafficking
Both are scheduled to appear in Fort Frances Court on Oct. 5, 2009.
“We receive information from the public on a regular basis which helps officers tie facts together in a case such as this,” Const. Anne McCoy said.
“We would really appreciate if the public would continue to help us out this way,” she added. “If we can get the marihuana plants before the drug hits the streets, it is much easier to keep the drugs away from the young people.
“As we teach students in the DARE program, marihuana is a starter drug and if we can get the plants before they hit the streets and keep the starter drugs away, hopefully that will make a difference,” noted Const. McCoy.
The Rainy River District OPP detachments want to remind the public that we are entering into the part of the growing season when those growing marihuana are beginning to cultivate the plant.
The OPP is seeking information from the public concerning marijuana cultivation and remind the public that they may remain anonymous by calling Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS.
