Orchestra plans ‘pops’ concerts

It’s been a busy season so far for the Borderland Community Orchestra—and they’re not slowing down yet.
Following the successful “Glorious Christmas” concert series last month, in which the orchestra teamed up with the Fort Frances Choraliers to perform some Christmas favourites, the orchestra now is planning two winter “pops” concerts in International Falls and Emo.
The shows will feature music from famous films such as “An American in Paris,” “Star Wars,” “Harry Potter,” “Phantom of the Opera,” “Superman,” and “E.T.”
The orchestra also will perform “big band” music popularized by the Glenn Miller orchestra, along with such favourites as “Moon River,” “Shenandoah,” and “Ashkokan Farewell.”
Scott Barker, a Fort High student from Devlin, will perform a violin solo in “Ashkokan Farewell.”
This is the third winter “pops” concert offered by the Borderland Community Orchestra.
“People like the ‘pop’ stuff,” laughed Marcia Bringedahl, a board member for Citizens for Backus/AB.
Katherine Williams and John Faith, an orchestra director and music teacher from the Falls, will share the role of conductor.
The International Falls performance will be held Tuesday, Jan. 23 at 7 p.m. at the Backus Auditorium.
Tickets are $10 for adults, $5 for children, and $25 for families, which are available at the Fort Frances Public Library and at the door.

The Emo performance will be held at the Legion on Friday, Jan. 26 at 7 p.m. Tickets cost $10 for adults and $5 for students and children.
Proceeds from that concert will go towards the Friends of the Library (Emo) and the Emo and District Hospital Auxiliary.
