One resident of Rose Manor has died in connection with a Tuesday morning fire that gutted at least two apartments in the building, according to the Rainy River District OPP.
In a press release from late Wednesday morning, the OPP confirmed that they, along with Fort Frances Fire Rescue Services and Rainy River District Paramedic Services, responded to a fire at the apartment building on Sixth Street East at approximately 5:22 a.m.
“Following reports of an individual still inside, firefighters entered the building and located a 92-year-old individual, who was pronounced deceased at the scene,” the OPP said in the release.
“All other residents were safely evacuated from the building.
The OPP did not reveal the identity of the deceased individual and are continuing to investigate the incident in collaboration with the Office of the Fire Marshall and the Office of the Chief Coroner.
The District of Rainy River Services Board (DRRSB), who manage the Rose Manor property, also put out a statement regarding the incident, confirming that one tenant of the building was declared deceased in connection with the fire, and that they would release no further personal details regarding the individual.
“On behalf of the board, I extend our deepest condolences to the family, friends, and neighbours of the tenant we have lost,” said DRRSB Chair Deb Ewald.
“Our thoughts are also with the Rose Manor residents and everyone affected by this tragic event. We are grateful to all those who have assisted in the response and in supporting residents during this difficult time.”
DRRSB noted that all other tenants of Rose Manor had been successfully evacuated from the building and have been provided with temporary accommodations. They also said that DRRSB staff and crisis-support workers would continue to work directly with affected tenants to address immediate needs and provide support.
“The DRRSB extends its sincere appreciation to all emergency responders, community partners,
staff, and others who have assisted residents and supported the response,” the organization said in its statement.
“Access to the property remains restricted while investigation and safety assessment activities continue. The DRRSB’s priority remains the safety, well-being, and support of Rose Manor residents and everyone affected. Tenants requiring information or assistance may contact 807-274-5349.
