The Rainy River District detachment of the OPP is pleased to announce summer student opportunities.
This year, the OPP has two different summer student initiatives.
The first is the Summer Experience Program (marine assistant), which pays $10.25 per hour, commencing June 26 and ending on or about Aug. 26.
One student will assist the OPP with marine policing, enforcement, collision investigations, and disabled vessels in distress.
The student will help officers conduct marine checks on recreational boaters for safety equipment, personal watercraft licences, and safe operations of vessels, as well as assist in community policing functions.
Duties also will include performing administrative activities such as preparing correspondence, perform data entry, and word processing functions.
Responsibilities will require planning and organizing events, as well as co-ordination and managing of daily assigned work.
We are looking for one individual who currently is enrolled in a secondary or post-secondary school, or has completed all academic requirements for graduation within six months prior to May, 2011.
We are seeking an applicant who demonstrates effective communication and interpersonal skills, technical skills, organizational skills, and leadership abilities.
Applicants must be at least 18 years of age, have a minimum Ontario G2 driver’s licence with an excellent record, have successfully obtained a Pleasure Craft Operators Card, and have CPR and first aid qualifications.
Candidates also must successfully complete the recruitment/background check process.

The second is the Youth-In-Policing Initiative–an eight-week summer employment program with a salary of $10.70/hour for 40 hours per week.
Two positions will commence June 26 and conclude on or about Aug. 19.
The Youth-in-Policing Initiative is designed to engage youth by providing a positive paid summer work experience, on-the-job training, and mentorship opportunities.
The primary objectives of YIPI are to:
•provide a safe and positive summer employment opportunity for youth from diverse backgrounds;
•enhance relationship and partnerships between police and the communities they serve by developing a positive working relationship;
•promote youth participation and exposure to the work environment through diverse, educational, and productive work assignments with the police service; and
•promote the OPP as an employer of choice.
The Rainy River District detachment is looking for two individuals who are aged 14-17, reflect the cultural diversity of the community, will successfully complete the recruitment/background check process, agree to a mentor relationship, have not completed YIPI in the past, and will be returning to school in September.
Candidates who have computer skills, including web development, would be an asset.
