Over the 2012 August civic holiday weekend, officers of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Rainy River District Detachment focused their enforcement efforts on drivers and boaters who continue to drink and drive, drive aggressively or drive while distracted and those who are not compliant with seat belt and boating laws.
Within the Rainy River District, 120 patrol hours were dedicated to traffic enforcement while 10 hours were spent focusing on marine patrol.
Officers laid 49 speeding charges, 12 distracted driving charges, 6 liquor licence charges and 1 marine related charge.
It was noted that one vessel stop resulted in an operator being charged for failing to have any lifejackets onboard.
Furthermore, one vehicle driver was charged criminally with Impaired Driving.
Officers made over 140 contacts with drivers within our district and will continue their efforts throughout the year to keep our roadways and waterways safe.
