One-day strike will not affect RRDSB

Some school boards in the province will see another one-day strike tomorrow, but for high school students in the Rainy River District School Board (RRDSB), it will be business as usual.

Following the breakdown of talks between the Ontario Secondary School Teacher’s Federation (OSSTF) and the Government of Ontario yesterday, the OSSTF announced it will continue with its planned one-day strike on Wednesday, Dec. 18 in several school boards across the province, including the Lakehead District School Board and Thunder Bay Catholic District School Board.

The one-day action is similar in nature to the strike action taken last week, where the RRDSB was affected, but several other boards in the province were not.

Students at Fort Frances High School will have a full day of classes tomorrow, with teachers engaging in their ongoing work-to-rule withdrawal of services as well as an information picket.

The latest round of negotiations lasted only one day, with CBC reporting that the mediator had decided both parties were too far apart to continue with the talks.

CBC also reported that talks would not resume again until January.

The OSSTF maintains the issues at hand are class sizes, mandatory online courses and funding cuts, while the Ministry of Education says the main issue is compensation.
