The Northwest Catholic District School Board this year is promoting the Student Leadership Development Program.
The board is proud to recognize our students who are showing strong leadership and commitment to creating social justice projects in their schools.
Teacher Meghan Haley accompanied two student leaders from Our Lady of the Way School, Rebecca Zimmerman and Ryan Pollard, to a recognition event at the board’s February meeting.
Both of these students were being recognized for their outstanding leadership in the school.
Pollard and Zimmerman were selected to represent the school as student leaders.
They have participated in leadership videoconferences with the Northwest Catholic District School Board’s elementary schools to come up with ways to demonstrate leadership and promote social justice around the school community at home and abroad.
Our Lady of the Way School is involved in the “10 by 10 Challenge” through the “Free the Children” Foundation.
They are planning different leadership activities within the school, such as a board-wide Lenten project.
The students have shown great interest in helping out a Third World community, by building a well and/or buying a goat, in order for a community to have clean water, food, and milk.
Zimmerman also is a member of “PALS,” a program where older student leaders take groups of younger students and play games with them at recess.
Both Pollard and Zimmerman are involved in the intramural program at Our Lady of the Way School, which promotes sportsmanship, fair play, and community.
The intramural program runs every lunch hour, and supports the Grade 3-8 students in physical activity.
“The trustees were proud of the students and teachers for making Catholic leadership a focus in all of our Catholic schools this year,” said board chair Anne-Marie Fitzgerald.
