Ojibway language program lauded

Press Release

The Rainy River District School Board launched an extended Ojibway language project at Mine Centre School this year, which incorporates 90 minutes of immersion instruction in a variety of subjects for senior kindergarten and Grade 1 students.
Self-identified First Nations’ students account for roughly 90 percent of the enrolment at Mine Centre School, and the board is committed to the enhancement and promotion of aboriginal education to meet the needs of aboriginal students and to benefit all students.
Mine Centre School was chosen as the site for this initiative based on the student population, the skill of the educators, and the staff’s knowledge and connection with the local First Nations’ communities.
Language is one of the most central parts of culture, and research demonstrates that second language education significantly strengthens skills in areas of reading, vocabulary, grammar, and communication skills.
Knowing other languages and understanding other cultures is a 21st-century skill set for all students as they prepare to live and work in a global society.
As the board works in partnership with First Nations’ communities to create strong relationships, educational opportunities will continue to improve for aboriginal youth and a stronger, more inclusive education system will be created for all students.
