Robert Moore School’s healthy snack program will receive the Rainy River District School Board’s Recognition of Excellence award at tonight’s last regular board meeting before summer holidays.
The program began in December, 2005—organized by parents and guardians from the school council—following the completion of the kitchen in the basement of the school through the Innovative Project fund.
Linda Wall organized the initiative, enlisting volunteers from the school community.
Every morning, a tray of nutritional snacks is delivered to each classroom and is there for all students.
The program has been made possible through the contributions of a large number of local organizations and individuals.
“A nourishing start to the day, with wholesome food, goes a long way in contributing to healthy children and families,” the board’s report reads.
“There is a direct correlation between nutrition and the academic achievement of our students,” it continues.
Also tonight, the board will hear a recap of how students did at both the Rainy River District speech contest and the Rainy River District science fair.
Also at tonight’s meeting, the board will:
•hear a report on activities at Fort Frances High School during Aboriginal Celebration Week (May 14-18);
•hear a report on the Young Women’s Conference (May 11-13);
•vote to award the tender for the construction of portables at J. W. Walker School;
•vote on whether to proceed with the accommodation review for F.H. Huffman School; and,
•vote on the 2007/08 budget.
The meeting gets underway at 7 p.m. at Robert Moore School.
