Nominees sought for ‘top citizen’

Duane Hicks

Deadline
Oct. 17
Do you know someone who is deserving of the title “Citizen of the Year?”
The town’s “Citizen of the Year” selection committee is asking the public to start thinking about individuals who have made a difference in our community and nominate them for the award, which is being given out for the 24th time this year.
Nomination forms are now available at the information desk at the Civic Centre.
Letters requesting nominations also have been sent out to local service clubs and other organizations.
Town secretary Lori Pattison said no forms had been picked up as of this morning.
Anyone who has done an outstanding job for the community in any way is eligible for the award. The only stipulation is that the recipient be a resident of Fort Frances and that the nominee not presently hold elected office.
Completed nomination forms must be returned to the Civic Centre by 4 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 17.
New to the selection committee this year is Linda Hamilton (“Citizen of the Year 2008”) and Gord McBride, who are joining Couns. Andrew Hallikas and Paul Ryan.
Hamilton said she feels the more nomination forms submitted prior to the Oct. 17 deadline, the better.
“I hope there’s lots to choose from,” she remarked.
“I hope people get out there and nominate who they think is worthy because it would be nice to have a large group to select from.”
The “Citizen of the Year” will be honoured formally at the town’s annual appreciation banquet on Friday, Nov. 17 at La Place Rendez-Vous, and also likely will take part in the Santa Claus and Canada Day parades.
The identities of the nominees will not be revealed. Only the
selected individual will be publicly announced.
Last year’s “Citizen of the Year” was Joyce Cunningham.
Past “Citizen of the Year” honourees also include Diane Maxey (2009), Dr. Robert Lidkea (2007), June Keddie (2006), Patti-Jo Reid (2005), Joyce Gosselin (2004), John Dutton (2003), Jean and Lin Boileau (2002), John McTaggart (2001), Bill Gushulak (2000), Jim Cumming (1999), Walter Horban (1998), Terry Ogden (1997), Gordon McTaggart (1996), and Pastor Earl Swanson (1995).
