Nods in for ‘top citizen’

With the deadline for applications having elapsed yesterday, the town’s “Citizen of the Year” selection committee now has to decide who will receive the award, which is being given out for the 20th time this year.
A total of seven nominations forms were turned by the end of the day, with the selection committee expected to meet sometime next week to discuss the applicants.
A recommendation must be made prior to the Nov. 12 council meeting, at which time the selected nominee will be approved and announced.
(The identities of the nominees will not be revealed. Only the winner will be publicly announced).
The “Citizen of the Year” then will be formally honoured at the town’s annual appreciation banquet on Friday, Nov. 16 at La Place Rendez-Vous, and also likely will take part in the Santa Claus parade.
The selection committee consists of Bill Gushulak (“Citizen of the Year” 2000), Mark Kowalchuk (“Citizen of the Year” 1994), Mayor Roy Avis, and Coun. Andrew Hallikas.
Anyone who has done an outstanding job for the community in any way is eligible for the award. The only stipulation is that they be a resident of the Town of Fort Frances and not presently hold elected office.
In other news, no one has filed nomination papers yet to run for town council in the Jan. 14 byelection to fill the vacancy left by Tannis Drysdale.
Nov. 30 is the deadline for nominations. Individuals interested in running for the vacant council seat can pick up a form at the Civic Centre.
A person may put their name forward to run for council by filing a nomination form with the clerk’s office in person, or by an agent, up until Nov. 30.
There is a $100 fee.
The term of office is the remainder of the four-year term of the current council, which expires Nov. 30, 2010.
