No new fires were reported in the Northwest Region as of yesterday evening.
But six fires remain active, with a majority being caused by lightning.
Three fires are located in the Thunder Bay district, with one fire each in the Fort Frances, Sioux Lookout, and Nipigon districts.
Fort Frances Fire #6, a lightning-caused blaze located in the southwest portion of Quetico Provincial Park, is being monitored as it will benefit the ecological integrity and health of the area.
Meanwhile, Sioux Lookout Fire #35, located north of Wabakimi Provincial Park, is sized at 2.5 hectares and presently is “being observed.”
There are no values threatened as the fire is limited by a water system to the west.
Weather in the Northwest Region will see mainly sunny and dry conditions redevelop as a high pressure system settles over the central areas.
Winds will be light, with temperatures in the mid- to high teens.
The fire hazard remains low in the southern districts while the north seems to be holding the highest hazard.
In related news, the province is continuing to support Alberta and other agencies as requested and able.
With Alberta looking at another seven days of fire weather without a break, Ontario has committed to sustain a level of 14 20-person crews and to replace crews as required with fresh ones.
The province will provide two extra crews by the end of this week, plus one Incident Management Team and a variety of fire specialist personnel.
The IMT will take over the Fort McMurray fire by the end of the week.
