On Monday around 8:45 p.m., Rainy River District OPP officers responded to a report of a fire at the Salvation Army building on Victoria Avenue here.
The Fort Frances Fire Department arrived on the scene initially and had extinguished the fire involving items left outside of the building, including a pile of books, clothing, paper, and a couch.
The fire occurred in an area between a walkway and hedge on the north side of the building.
A person of interest was located a short time later at La Verendrye Hospital and was taken into custody for an unrelated matter.
Investigation has revealed the source of the fire likely was due to a burning cigarette and no charges were laid as a result.
The OPP will continue to monitor the area of the Salvation Army in their patrols.
Meanwhile, the public is reminded that donated items are needed and appreciated at the Salvation Army, but leaving excess clothing or furniture items outside the building could result in trespassing outside of business hours.
If making a delivery of an amount that exceeds the storage capacity, consult with the Salvation Army to assist them in ensuring a safe delivery of your donated items.
