The Town of Fort Frances Physician Recruitment Committee is pleased to announce that Dr. Bahram Shahi, a general surgeon with experience in Northwestern Ontario, has agreed to relocate from Glasgow, Nova Scotia to Fort Frances.
Dr. Shahi is presently finishing up a two-month locum (temporary assignment) at La Verendrye General Hospital and will take some time off before returning in August.
Dr. Shahi is a graduate of University of Tehran Faculty of Medicine and he completed his general surgery residency at the University of Western Ontario in London.
An avid runner, he has taken to jogging on the waterfront and other popular routes in town.
“Our thanks are extended to Dr. Anderson, Dr. Moorhouse and Cindy Cole and the surgical staff at LVGH who provided such an inviting environment to simplify Dr. Shahi’s decision,” said committee chair Dr. Jason Shack.
“Dr. Shahi has quickly integrated into our medical community and we are all looking forward to his return,” he added.
Regretfully, the committee members learned that Dr. Cynthia Saliba has submitted her resignation to the Fort Frances Clinic and Nelson Medical Corporation, effective August, 2012.
Dr. Saliba arrived in Fort Frances in the fall of 2010 and made an immediate impact in the community—first in the clinic setting and more recently providing surgical first assist in the LVGH operating room.
She was also a valued member of the Riverside Health Care Facilities board representing the medical staff association.
The committee wishes Dr. Saliba and her husband, Dave van Dyk, all the best in their future endeavours.
The committee continues its efforts to recruit family physicians to the community.
This includes regular meetings with medical students at the Thunder Bay campus of the Northern Ontario School of Medicine, fielding frequent questions from physicians inquiring about opportunities and the creation of advertising and media displays for upcoming provincial recruitment tours.
The Physician Recruitment Committee consists of municipal representatives from the Town of Fort Frances, Nelson Medicine Professional Corporation, the Fort Frances Community Clinic and Riverside Health Care Facilities.
The committee also features participation from Resolute Forest Products, the Rainy River District School Board, the Northwest Catholic District School Board, and the Rainy River Future Development Corporation.
