Ducks Unlimited wants to put new information panels along the La Verendrye Parkway here.
It is proposing a two-part project to replace panels which Ducks Unlimited Canada and the Town of Fort Frances once partnered to install on the riverfront walking path but have since fallen into disrepair, Charles Fisher of DU’s Fort Frances Chapter wrote in an e-mail to council.
“First, the existing panels will be replaced,” he noted.
“Ducks Unlimited will design the panels, which will contain similar information on these three species, as well as the world-famous Ducks Unlimited ‘duck head’ logo and the Town of Fort Frances logo,” he added.
DU will seek out a local service provider to create the physical signage while the town would be responsible for installing of the new panels, Fisher said.
Secondly, DU is seeking permission from the town to expand the number of panels along the waterfront.
“As the original idea of the project was to provide information about the various species one might encounter along the La Verendrye Parkway [the common goldeneye, common loon, and bufflehead], additional signage should be incorporated in the project providing information on other species such as mallards, Canada geese, wood ducks, pelicans, and more,” Fisher noted.
The new signs would extend along the walkway at regularly-spaced intervals.
Depending on the cost, Fisher said the project may be extended over a number of years.
DU would be responsible for content design and fabrication of the signage and stands.
The town would donate the space, as well as install the signage.
“This project will serve to provide educational information to users of the La Verendrye Parkway, visibility to Ducks Unlimited Canada in the Town of Fort Frances, and will position the town as a partner with one of Canada’s best-known environmental organizations,” Fisher said.
Council is expected to refer the request to the Operations and Facilities executive committee for its recommendation.
Also tonight, council will hear a presentation from local resident Melissa Pearson regarding “We Own It,” a national campaign on combating privatization, as well as a Rainy River Future Development Corp. economic development activity report from consultant Tannis Drysdale.
The committee of the whole will meet first at 5:30 p.m., but will go in-camera for an indefinite length of time to discuss four items (one legal matter, two property matters, and an appointment to a board or committee).
Other items on tonight’s agenda include:
•a Safe Communities Rainy River District per capita funding request;
•a recommendation re: an additional sidewalk on McIrvine Road from King’s Highway to Fort Frances High School entrance;
•a report re: standard operating procedures for the water treatment plant’s emergency stand-by generator;
•a marketing licence agreement with Service Line Warranties of Canada to provide sewer and water service warranties within the Town of Fort Frances;
•a recommendation re: a request from the Church of the Holy Spirit for the installation of a groundwater well at 1408 Eighth St. E.;
•a report re: a review of the Fort Frances Fire & Rescue Service; and
•a recommendation re: proposed changes to residential refuse and recycling collection.
