Fort Frances District firefighters responded to a new fire in Quetico Provincial Park on Saturday.
FireRangers and a waterbomber took action on the fire, which was showing open flame and spreading at a rate of about two-three metres per minute.
The blaze, which probably was caused by lightning, currently is classified as “under control” at 0.7 hectares in size.
The West Fire Region has a total of eight active fires, including three in Fort Frances District, two in Red Lake District, two in Nipigon District and one in Kenora District.
The newest fire is Nipigon fire #16, a 2.0 ha. lightning-caused fire reported this morning. It is classified as “not under control.”
There was one new fire in Kenora District yesterday. It was a campfire with response from the Sioux Narrows Fire Department and is now “out.”
In early evening yesterday, a new fire was reported as a large smoke south of Thunder Bay. It was a dump fire with response by the municipal fire department in Neebing Township.
Thunder Bay District also responded to a new human-caused fire south of Highway 11 about 35 km west of Shabaqua on Saturday.
Air attack assisted FireRangers in the initial stages of the fire, which was kept to 0.1 ha in size. It was declared “out” by the end of the weekend.
