With less than a year until students and staff walk through its doors, progress continues to be made at the site of the Rainy River District School Board’s newest school.
“[Construction] is moving along quite well,” Raymond Roy, manager of plant operations for the board, said about the status of the new school, which is going up in behind the current Robert Moore School on Second Street East.
“While slightly behind schedule, the project is ‘still good’ time-frame wise, he added.
“The steel work was a little behind because of the fabrication of the steel, but the contractor is working to try and get back on schedule,” Roy added, though stressing the board still is planning to open the school in September.
“The concrete guys are doing all the interior block work, the mechanical/electrical fellows are doing all their work,” Roy noted.
“The duct work has started, the heating system has started to be put into place,” he added.
“The steelworkers are pretty close to 90 percent done, they should be 100 percent done with the steel by Christmas.
“You should see some roofers on site pretty quick, as early as next week,” Roy continued.
When finished, the new facility will be home to students and staff from the current Robert Moore School and F.H. Huffman School.
It will be roughly 51,000 square feet in size and accommodate 480 students.
Altogether, there will be 10 junior and intermediate classrooms, seven primary classrooms, and four junior and senior kindergarten classes.
There also will be two computer labs, a special education room, a music/stage room, healing/reading room, library, and a 52’ x 90’ gymnasium.
Demolition of the old Robert Moore School is slated for the summer of 2011.
Prior to demolition, renovations will occur at the board office since it is attached to the old school.
Renovations are expected to begin next September and be completed by June, 2011, with board staff relocated to the old Robert Moore School in the meantime.
Since the new school marks an amalgamation of two schools, the board currently is seeking public input on the new school’s name.
