New education director may be hired tonight

The Rainy River District School Board will be looking to hire its new director of education at tonight’s monthly board meeting, which is slated for 7 p.m. at Robert Moore School.
The position came open after Jack McMaster resigned earlier this year to become director of education for the Keewatin-Patricia District School Board.
As the appointment of a new director is part of the hiring process, that part of the meeting will take place in-camera.
Superintendent of Education Heather Campbell has been acting as interim director.
Also before the board tonight will be a motion from the Finance committee that the RRDSB “authorize the use of Vote-By-Mail for the 2010 municipal election and approve Bylaw 165.”
As part of the Finance committee’s report, it also was noted the board has decided to decline a request from the Town of Fort Frances at this time to partner in rebuilding four tennis courts at the St. Francis Sportsfield—a project that would cost $500,000.
In other news, this month’s Recognition of Excellence award will be going to Mine Centre School for its “Extended Ojibway Language Program.”
This pilot program sees 12 students in Senior Kindergarten and Grade 1 incorporate the Ojibwe language into 90 more minutes of instruction during subjects such as science, social studies, art, music, and phys. ed.
Campbell also will be making a presentation to the board on “Intentional Teaching in a Play-based Environment.”
As well, Student Success leader Casey Slack will be giving a presentation on “Transitions.”
