New council poised to be sworn in tonight

The new mayor and council elected Nov. 10 will be sworn in during a special ceremony tonight at the Civic Centre.
The public is welcome to attend as new mayor Dan Onichuk, incumbent councillors Roy Avis, Struchan Gilson, and Neil Kabel, and new councillors Tannis Drysdale, Todd Hamilton, and Rick Wiedenhoeft take their oaths of office.
Administrative assistant Loreen Holt said this morning the list of confirmed guests includes the Fort Frances Highlanders, OPP Colour Party, an RCMP officer, Crown Attorney Robert “Buster” Young, Justice of the Peace Pat Clysdale- Cornell, Fort Frances OPP S/Sgt.
Hugh Dennis, town solicitor Wes Derksen, and representatives from the town’s auditors, BDO Dunwoody.
Pastor Stephen Laing, who had been a candidate for council in last month’s election, will do the convocation.
Holt said the ceremony will start at 7 p.m. and the public “is certainly welcome to be there.”^Tonight’s inaugural meeting of the new council isn’t expected to include any business besides the swearing-in ceremony. This should take less than an hour.
The event will be broadcast on Shaw Cable (Channel 11).
Dainties and coffee will be served afterwards downstairs at the Civic Centre.
In related news, the new members of the incoming council met with acting CAO Mark McCaig last Thursday to get a briefing on current town activities and protocol, as well as to tour town facilities.
The new council will have its first two regular meetings back-toback on Monday, Dec. 8 and Monday, Dec. 15 (the latter being moved up a week due to the Christmas holidays).
The first two meetings of 2004 are slated for Monday, Jan. 14 and Monday, Jan. 27.
