Dr. Shayla Kennedy last week joined the local practice of Dr. Jeremy McGuire as an associate chiropractor.
Raised in Erickson, Man., Dr. Kennedy began her academic career by attending the University of Manitoba in Winnipeg, where she received her Bachelor of Science degree.
“After I graduated, I took one year off [and] I backpacked through Australia,” she said. “After a year, I returned to school and attended the Northwestern College of Chiropractic in Minneapolis, Mn.”
Upon graduating after four years of study, Dr. Kennedy decided to continue her practice in a Minneapolis suburb.
“I practised [there] for a year but then I decided that I wanted to be closer to my family,” she admitted. “So I moved back to Manitoba and worked there for about six months.”
That’s when she was offered a job she felt was simply too good to pass up.
“Dr. McGuire asked me if I would like to come and work for him in Fort Frances,” she recalled. “There was a need for another chiropractor in the community and I thought it was a great opportunity.
“I actually wanted to be an optometrist,” she confessed. “But then I went to see a chiropractor for these migraine headaches I had been having since I was nine.
“I had gone through all the tests and there just didn’t seem to be anything they could do for me.
“I was about 20 years old when I went to see a chiropractor. The treatments were so successful that I decided I wanted to be able to help people the same way I had been helped,” she remarked.
Dr. Kennedy said she’s already beginning to feel at home in her new surroundings, and is looking forward to the chance to help people improve their lives.
“I really love what I do because I get to help make people’s lives easier,” she enthused. “Giving them the ability to do activities they love to do is really a wonderful thing.
“So far my experience here has been really good. The staff has been wonderful, and I have met a lot of great people,” she added. “I am looking forward to getting to know the community.”
