FORT FRANCES—Just in time for Ontario Elder Abuse Awareness Day (Oct. 19), the local District Mental Health Services Older Adults Program has launched its new seniors’ safety calendar.
Gerri Yerxa, a geriatric mental health therapist with the program, was at Canada Safeway here Wednesday for its monthly Seniors’ Day, where she was promoting the free calendar.
It includes information about ways to cope with stress and what you can do about elder abuse and neglect, as well as reminders to be prepared in case of a house fire, to eat well and exercise, and to use common sense to avoid frauds, scams, and theft.
What’s more, it features artwork by local students, that depicts respect and dignity towards seniors, with messages such as “Seniors Rock!—Play with Grandma Today!” to “Elderly people make the best pies! Let them teach you!”
The artwork chosen for the calendar were winners from a poster contest held back in June.
The winners were determined by a panel of judges consisting of local seniors Jean and Lin Boileau, Sadie Kowalchuk, Jean Lambert, and Rozan Shearer.
While Yerxa plans on returning to Safeway for the Seniors’ Day in November to promote the new calendar some more, those who would like one before then are encouraged to drop by the program office at 414 Scott St.
