NDP to nominate candidate tonight

Local New Democrats will choose their candidate to run in the next provincial election in Kenora-Rainy River riding here Monday night.
But with no other names brought forward so far, it appears current MPP and party leader Howard Hampton will be acclaimed tonight.
The nomination meeting gets underway at 7 p.m. at the Elks Hall.
“So far only Howard has put his name forward,” said Jacob Leibovitch, Hampton’s assistant. “We [also] have had meetings in Kenora, Red Lake, Dryden, and Sioux Lookout and no one else has come forward.
“It is possible for there to be nominations at [tonight’s] meeting,” he added.
Anyone interested in running for the NDP nomination in this riding must be a member of the party in good standing, and have someone to nominate and second them.
Joe Comartin, MP for Windsor-St. Clair and federal NDP environment critic , will be the guest speaker at tonight’s meeting.
“Both are excellent speakers and will be talking on issues of local concern from both the federal and provincial perspectives,” Leibovitch said.
