Having played in Fort Frances before My Son the Hurricane is happy to be touring post-pandemic. They’re hoping to bring happiness with them as they bring the funk back to Fort Frances on Sunday Sept. 25.

Vocalist Sylvie Kindree says it’s been great to be back on the road after a pandemic hiatus.

“It has felt amazing,” Kindree said. “Words can’t describe it, we all needed it so badly and I think the audience feels the same way. Everyone’s waiting to let loose again and be human and live. That’s what it feels like, it feels like we’re alive again. We’re doing what we’re supposed to be doing and everyone feels that at the show.”

The band is big and they put out a big sound. The band often includes multiple trombones, saxophones and trumpets in addition to the drums, guitar and bass most bands have, as well as additional percussion.

“I would say that first and foremost we are a dance party show,” Kindree said. “Our number one thing is big energy. It’s just like a party, we want to bring joy.”

When asked about the dynamic of having such a large band–which typically has at least 10 members playing in a show–Kindree said the band feels like a family.

“We all love each other a lot,” She said. “We’re like a family, I’m not just saying that. We are totally a family and we take care of each other. We just work really well together and we’re very conscious of being professional and doing our job properly, but also being friendly and helpful to each other wherever we’re working.”

Kindree says the hope for the Fort Frances show is to see people having fun.

“We hope to bring a good time for people to come out and smile and hopefully dance,” She said. “I know not everyone’s comfortable with that yet. But more and more I’m seeing people just givin’ it. Like they just want to be in the moment and enjoy what’s happening and just all of us experiencing a moment together because that’s one of the things we missed so much during the pandemic, having a whole bunch of people in one place that are experiencing one thing together. Every time we’ve played Fort Frances we’ve had a really good time, audiences have been great so I think it’s going to be that again.”

Opening for My Son the Hurricane will be local favourites Kings of None.
