Music added to chefs’ dinner

Plans for the Alzheimer Society’s fifth-annual “Chefs’ Charitable Dinner and Auction” coming up Sunday, Jan. 24 at the Adventure Inn here just got a little more fun with the addition of musical entertainment for the evening.
“Lorne Nelson comes all the way from Dryden to bring us music that everyone will be sure to enjoy,” Margaret Schonewille, executive director of the local Alzheimer Society, said yesterday.
“Lorne sings a little of everything—western, Beach Boys, Elvis, the list is endless,” she added.
Tickets for the dinner are selling but there are some left at this time, noted Schonewille.
They cost $50 each (which includes a $25 tax receipt), and are available at the Adventure Inn, La Flambée, Lee Garden, and Emo Inn or directly from Schonewille by contacting her at 1-800-682-0245 (Visa and Mastercard accepted).
Schonewille recalled last year’s dinner here did sell out so those interested in attending should get their tickets sooner than later.
But she added if there are any left on the day of the dinner, they will be sold at the door.
She also pointed out there will be arranged seating so if people buy tickets separately but then want to sit together, contact Schonewille and she’ll try to seat them at the same table if possible.
As previously reported, this year’s meal will feature a prime rib entrée instead of a buffet (you’ll be able to pick how well done is your cut), along with salad, potatoes, and vegetables, as well as a selection of desserts.
The evening, which will be emceed by B93•FM morning show host Christa Pare, also will feature a penny table, silent auction, and other fun activities.
Schonewille said she’s gotten quite a few individuals and businesses to donate items for the fundraiser, but more are welcome to do so and should call to let her know.
Likewise, several local restaurants have agreed to donate and prepare the food for the dinner. But any that Schonewille may not have contacted, but still would like to participate, should give her a call at the number above or via e-mail at alzheimers@kenora.com
Last January’s dinner here was the best one yet, raising about $6,200.
In related news, the annual “Penny for Your Thoughts” weigh-in is scheduled to take place at Canadian Tire here on Friday, Jan. 22 from 4-7 p.m. and again Saturday, Jan. 23 from 8:30 a.m.-noon.
There will be prizes for the individual and the group that brings in the most pennies (pennies don’t have to be rolled, but rolled pennies should not be unrolled).
This will be followed by the Linda Johnston Memorial “Dinner to Remember” at the Rainy River Legion on the evening of Saturday, Jan 23.
The perenially-popular roast beef dinner once again will feature a penny auction and coincide with the draw for the fifth -annual “Chairs for Charity” raffle.
Tickets for that dinner cost $12 each, which are available at the Rainy River Record office while supplies last.
Tickets for the “chairs” raffle, which cost $2 each or three for $5, are available at the Record office, the Rainy River Legion, Bergland General Store, and Rainy River Drugs, as well as from Alzheimer Society volunteers..
Proceeds from fundraising events of the Alzheimer Society of Kenora-Rainy River District go towards further promotion of Alzheimer awareness and education in both districts, not to a provincial or national organization.
