It was a packed house at the Legion here Saturday night as local residents, and some from International Falls, came out to enjoy the traditional food and song of Ireland.
Billed as a pre-St. Patrick’s Day party, sponsored by the Rainy Lake Multicultural Association, about 145 people came out to eat corned beef and cabbage, watch the McConnell Irish dancers, and tap their toes to the traditional Irish sounds of “Celtic Way.”
“Personally, I was very happy with it,” said Sig Mosley, who organized the event along with Bev Kotnik and Linda Rajala. “I’ve had phone calls and people dropping by to say they enjoyed themselves. It’s been a good response.”
“We really enjoyed the preparing of it–the cooking, the decorating,” noted Rajala. “Just seeing the looks on people’s faces when they came in–they maybe didn’t expect to see all those decorations.
“I think it wasn’t what people were expecting. It was better than what they expected,” she added.
Best of all, the association is now confident enough to try its hand at similar celebrations later in the year.
“It was really our trial balloon and now we’re ready to plan some more,” said Mosley, hinting at Scandinavian, Ukrainian, or German-themed festivities.
“We still have to sit down and figure out how much money we need but I think there’ll be something going in the fall for sure,” she added.
The Rainy Lake Multicultural Association would like to give special thanks to members of the local Legion Ladies’ Auxiliary, who helped out greatly to stage this event.
