After a successful first run last spring, the “Mother Goose” early literacy program will resume at the Fort Frances Public Library starting this Thursday at 10 a.m.
A 10-week session for children up to two years of age and their parents, there’s still some openings for those who want to register, librarian Evelyn Norris said this morning.
“It’s really a program for the mothers,” she noted. “We teach them lap rhymes, songs, and story-telling techniques, and encourage them to interact with their children as well as other mothers and their children.”
These ways of communicating with young children have proven to be useful in laying a foundation for their language skills in the future.
“It’s been very successful. People have enjoyed it,” said Norris. “By the end of the 10 weeks, the children—even the very young ones—become very comfortable with it all.”
She added many moms from last year’s “Mother Goose” program still drop by the library on Wednesday afternoons for a kind of unofficial “mini-Mother Goose” program, and share their experiences with it.
Norris noted caregivers will be on hand so mothers trying to learn during the program won’t have to keep their eye on their children the entire time.
If you do not have a means of getting to the library, the library van can be booked to pick you up. Calling the day before is advised, said Norris.
