The Town of Fort Frances won’t be participating in the Canada 150 Mosaic—a national project to create a mosaic mural for Canada’s 150th celebration in 2017.
The town was asked by the Canada 150 Mosaic organizers last April if it would participate in the project, which would see citizens create a community mural that then would become part of the massive national mural comprised of 150 community murals on July 1, 2017.
But the Community Services division looked into what participating would cost and found it not feasible.
The cost to the community would be $10,000-$12,500, depending on the size of the mural.
Two or three artists would come and paint 150 tiles while community members would paint 400 over the course of three days.
The actual painting would take place on the first two, with the artists clear coating the tiles and mounting them on the third day.
The three-day project could happen at a special event, such as the bass tournament. People would stop by and paint a tile.
Alternately, the town could have its own event that people would register for ahead of time.
The town would be responsible for promoting the event and organizing it.
On the final day, an unveiling of the mural would take place.
In a report approved by council at last night’s meeting, the Community Services executive committee recommended council not pursue the Canada 150 Mosaic Project due to the financial and human resources commitment required.
Also last night, council:
•heard a presentation from “Paws Around Town” spokesperson Carey Basaraba, who posed questions regarding council’s recent decision to suspended the consideration of a dog park at this time;
•heard a presentation of the Fort Frances Public Library Technology Centre’s 2015-18 strategic plan by library board chair Andrew Hallikas and vice-chair Robert Schulz;
•received a Rainy River Future Development Corp. activity report from economic development officer Geoff Gillon; and
•heard bi-annual division activity reports for Planning & Development (chair Doug Kitowski), Operations & Facilities (chair Paul Ryan), Administration & Finance (chair Ken Perry), and Community Services (chair Ken Perry).
