The Fort Frances Canadian Bass Championship is the biggest event of the summer here but it takes many helping hands to pull it off.
And with it being less than three weeks away, the search is still on for more volunteers.
“We’re doing very well with our volunteers. But we still need more for tent set-up and take down, the dock area [morning and return boat checks], general clean-up, and other areas,” said Cathy Tovey, director of volunteer services for the FFCBC.
“People can sign up by going to the Chamber of Commerce, calling 274-0316, or going to www.canadianbass.com,” she added, noting how easy it is to get involved.
Tovey also said almost anyone is welcome to lend a hand. “We try and have 14-year-olds and up but there are some 12-year-olds who are a little more mature that volunteer,” she said.
“And if they’re looking to work off their community service hours, this is a good way to do it,” she added, referring to the 40 hours of volunteerism now required for high school students to graduate.
Those who volunteer get a T-shirt, water bottle, 10 “Bass
Bucks,” and are eligible for prizes. “We’ll also have daily attendance prizes so if they’re on site, they’re welcome to enter those draws,” Tovey noted.
But the best reason to volunteer is that “it’s a lot of fun,” added Tovey, who helped out as a volunteer on the docks for four years before becoming director of volunteer services.
Last year’s tourney saw more than 500 volunteers help out. And talking from experience, Tovey stressed while the anglers may be the “stars” of the tourney, the volunteers are its backbone.
“We couldn’t do it without them. We do so well every year, and it wouldn’t be a success without them,” she said.
