The Fort Frances Chamber of Commerce is looking for more chefs to participate in “Pasta Palooza,” which is scheduled to take place next Wednesday (Sept. 27) upstairs at the Memorial Sports Centre.
Four teams have been confirmed for the event, with a possible fifth one pending, Chamber executive director Jennifer Soderholm said yesterday.
But organizers would like to provide hungry patrons with as wide a variety of noodle dishes as possible, she noted.
“We still have lots of room for other businesses,” Soderholm stressed.
“We are hoping for a minimum of eight [teams], maximum of 12.”
Soderholm said the change in theme from chili to pasta has been met with a positive reception.
“We’ve had a lot of people calling, wanting to know when it’s going to be, how much it’s going to be, and that because they’re just excited it’s coming up,” she remarked.
“That’s really encouraging,” she enthused. “We just hope we end up with enough food to make it worth their while.”
While participants do not have to be affiliated with a local business, many traditionally have been.
After all, participating gives a business more exposure and a chance to meet with the public in a casual, fun setting.
As in the past, participants must prepare their food for the cook-off in an inspected kitchen, such as one in a church or restaurant.
“If people want a list of places that are available, they can contact me,” said Soderholm, adding finding such a kitchen usually isn’t a problem.
Organizers also are asking pasta teams to prepare more food than in the past.
They’re asked to make eight gallons of pasta, as opposed to four gallons of chili.
“Just because last year we ran short,” Soderholm recalled. “We were over an hour before our end-time and we were out of most of [the chili].
“And seeing as it’s pasta, we could end up having a lot more people,” she noted.
“We are just trying to make sure we have enough for everyone.”

“Pasta Palooza” will take place from 4:30-7:30 p.m. in the arena auditorium.
Like in past years, patrons will be able to get one bowl or plate, or buy a sampler, taste all of the pastas, and then vote for their favourite.
Teams will compete for People’s Choice and Judges’ Choice awards once again.
Flint House will run the bar so patrons of age can enjoy wine with their pasta.
The Fort Frances Lakers, meanwhile, will be running the cake roulette–so be sure to bring along extra money to try and win a delicious dessert to take home.
