Three new fires were reported in the Northwest Region by yesterday evening. The fires were located in the Red Lake, Fort Frances and Dryden Districts.
A total of 21 fires were reported in Northwestern Ontario over the weekend. The fire behaviour on the new starts ranged from creeping, to running and torching in trees that required air attack to keep in check.
The Northwest Region will be mobilizing a total of 15 four person FireRanger crews for fire assignment in the East Fire Region of Ontario. Precipitation is forecast in the Northwest and the East Fire Region is contending with over 30 new fire starts on Monday alone.
Progress continues on Kenora fire #41 southeast of Kenora. Infrared scanning continues seeking to pinpoint hot spots that are not visible but would pose a risk to flare into open flame under the right weather conditions.
Four ignition specialists from the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources returned to Ontario yesterday following a successful role fighting a Michigan wildfire. The four personnel were dispatched as a helitorch crew to assist with aerial ignition fire suppression efforts on a large fire burning in Michigan.
The helitorch crew from Ontario conducted successful burnout operations on the fire removing forest fuel from the advancing wildfire, effectively stopping its advance.
