More help needed for ‘chem-free’ grad

Following an initial meeting Wednesday night meant to kick-start the organizing of this year’s “chem-free” party for Fort High grads, it’s clear more parents and other volunteers will have to come out for the next meeting Feb. 18 at 7 p.m. in the high school library.
“We only had five or six people come out,” said Patti Boileau, who was among those in attendance.
“So we didn’t really discuss anything at the meeting. At this point, nobody’s chairing, no positions have been declared,” she added, noting volunteers for both the planning stages and to help out on the night of the party will be integral to its success.
“It’s likely to run the same format as before, with inflatables and gambling with the fake money. It will probably run from 10 p.m.-4 a.m.,” said Boileau, who also was involved with organizing the “chem-free” grad two years ago.
“We do have a problem with where we’re gong to have it, though. We can’t do it where we did last year [the ’52 Canadian Arena] because of the sprinkler system,” she remarked.
Boileau was referring to the fact that following renovations at the old arena last year, holding non ice-related events there is now a violation of the fire code without a new sprinkler system being installed.
“Hopefully, the town will see the light,” said Boileau. “We could do it on the new ice surface after the [graduation] ceremony, [but] that means we wouldn’t have that much time to set up.”
The “chem-free” grad has become a tradition over the years at Fort High as a safe alternative to celebrating high school graduation.
