Nine community organizations were presented cheques yesterday evening, as town council announced the recipients who would receive part of the $43,750 in funding allocated to town by the Moffat Family Fund.
With the fund’s aim to benefit children, families and the less advantaged, the largest cheque presented last evening’s council meeting was that of $12,650 made out for the Salvation Army.
“We were praying to have something like that for our programs,” said Capt. Angel Sandoval of the local Salvation Army. “Especially for our new program that we’re going to start in September.”
This new program, he explained, will be one that helps less fortunate families by providing personal hygiene products, especially for children.
“Today it’s sad to note that many children go without brushing their teeth, or washing their hair because the family income is going elsewhere,” Sandoval noted, a situation that this new program will hope to improve upon.
Alongside the Salvation Army, last night’s announcement by the town saw eight other organizations presented with cheques.
This included the Rainy River District Social Services Administration Board, who was presented with $9,000 as well as the Rainy River District Family and Children’s Services presented with a cheque for $3,000. Fort Frances Museum was awarded $2,600 in funding, while the Fort Frances Public Library was given $6,500.
On behalf of the Fort Frances Highlander Pipes and Drums, Jordan Manty and Ryan Wood were presented with a cheque for $1,000. Meanwhile, representing the 908 Rainy Lake Air Cadet Squadron, Lisa Strom was presented a cheque for $2,000.
Diane Maxey was on hand to represent St. John’s Anglican Church, to which $3,000 was awarded. Representing Kitchen Creek Golf Club, Faye Flatt was presented with a cheque for $4,000.
