Successful applicants for a share of the town’s $43,750 allocation from the Moffat Family Fund will be handed cheques at tonight’s regular council meeting.
A total of nine local groups, which won’t be revealed until tonight’s meeting, will get varying portions of the pot this year.
Individuals and organizations were invited back in February to submit their requests, including a specific dollar amount and the rationale behind it, to the local Moffat Family Fund committee.
A total of 12 applicants responded, requesting $74,926.48 in funding in all.
The selection committee—consisting of Marie Howells, Linda Hamilton, Capt. Angel Sandoval, Couns. Andrew Hallikas and Sharon Tibbs, and Mayor Roy Avis—then had to pare those applicants down to a number that could split the $43,750 the town once again was allotted to give to local groups that benefit children, families, and the less advantaged.
Tonight’s council meeting is scheduled to start at 7:10 p.m.
It will be preceded by the committee of the whole, which will meet in-camera from 5:30-6:20 p.m.
Business at this evening’s committee of the whole agenda will include:
•a report on donations fees for dedicated waterfront benches;
•a report on the renewal of the land lease agreement at the airport;
•a report on an adjustment to aviation fuel pump prices at the airport;
•an item from the Ontario Federation of Labour re: Buy Ontario, Buy Canada, Build Communities resolution;
•a financial request from the police services board re: proceeds from the annual police auction;
•2008 Municipal Performance Measurement Program results;
•a verbal update from Planning and Development Superintendent Rick Hallam regarding hedges and shrubs; and
•local project updates from Operations and Facilities manager Doug Brown and Community Services manager George Bell.
Business on tonight’s council agenda includes:
•a public meeting re: applications for tax adjustment at SM 119 Lots 58-70, Part Streets and Lanes, Part River Parcel 37-2;
•a request from the Rainy River Valley Safety Coalition re: placement of benches to promote safety;
•a request from the Northwestern Health Unit re: use of Memorial Sports Centre for a free community ’flu shot clinic on Oct. 27;
•a bylaw to approve a contract awarded to Dutka Signs for directional and interpretive signage for the Heritage Tourism Project;
•a bylaw to deem Lots 22 and the S 1/2 of Lot 23 on Plan SM-55;
•a bylaw to appoint BDO Dunwoody LLP as municipal auditor for a two-year term from Jan. 1, 2009-Dec. 31, 2010;
•a bylaw to deem Lots 160-161 on Plan SM-50;
•a bylaw to authorize agreements with Wilson’s Business Solutions to lease and service photocopiers at the museum, children’s complex, and Memorial Sports Centre;
•a bylaw to approve an agreement with Aurora Construction Ltd. of Thunder Bay for construction of a new public library and technology centre;
•a bylaw to designate a site plan control area and authorize entering into a site plan agreement as a condition of development of the new Robert Moore School;
•a bylaw to approve an agreement with the minister of transportation for financing under the Dedicated Gas Tax Funds for Public Transportation Program; and
•a request from the Rainy River District Festival for the Performing Arts re: dust suppressant.
