Two new fires were reported in the Northwest Region by early evening yesterday—one in Fort Frances District and one in Sioux Lookout District.
The first was located about 45 km northeast of Fort Frances in the Vista Lake area, but has since been put “out” at 0.1 hectares in size.
Six new fires were reported Wednesday, with five of them occurring in the Fort Frances District and one in the Thunder Bay District.
Fort Frances fire personnel were busy with fires in Quetico Park, assisting the municipal fire department in Dawson Township in the Rainy River area, and also a fire sparked by a downed hydro line near Caliper Lake with assistance from the Municipality of Nestor Falls.
Ontario also assisted Minnesota with some lightning-caused fires Wednesday with quick strike action from air attack units.
Periods of rain are forecast for the region, along with strong winds up to gale force.
Temperatures are expected to be at or near seasonal averages, but dropping below seasonal as the system progresses through the region.
There’s currently nine fires burning in the region, covering a total of 13 ha. The region has seen a total of 475 fires to date, consuming 32,825.6 ha altogether.
The fire hazard remains “low” in all districts, except Kenora, where it’s “low to moderate.”
