Ministry holding public meeting on youth facility

The Ministry of Children and Youth Services will be asking the public for their opinions on the proposed youth detention facility at an information session next Tuesday (July 24).
The meeting will take place from 7-8 p.m. at the Civic Centre. The public is encouraged to attend and learn more about the centre and the services for youth in conflict with the law.
In an effort to establish a dedicated youth justice system, the province announced in early June it would fund the construction of a new youth detention facility here in Fort Frances.
The 12-bed facility will be dedicated to aboriginal youth aged 12-17, and is scheduled for completion in early 2009.
The facility will be built on government-owned property at Eighth Street East and Christie Avenue North. It will be owned by the Ministry of Public Infrastructure and managed by the Ontario Realty Corporation (ORC).
As previously reported, the facility here will allow youth to move from the Kenora jail.
The ministry also announced last month it would fund construction of a new 16-bed facility in Thunder Bay in order to move youth from the Thunder Bay Correctional Centre.
These facilities will have state-of-the-art security and provide evidence-based rehabilitative programming. These services will include risk-needs assessment, case management, and reintegration planning.
Design and construction will be the responsibility of the Ontario Realty Corp., which will hire contractors through an open and competitive process.
